kilimanjaro?
I know, right? Years ago, when I first heard about Mt. Kilimanjaro (it was in a Toto song, of course) I knew it was in Africa (that was the title of the song after all). Later, when my sister first suggested we try to climb it, I seriously had to ask, "Now, where is that again?" Here are some facts you might want to know about Africa's highest mountain.
Location: Mt Kilimanjaro is located in Tanzania, Africa. Tanzania is in east Africa and an amazing country. We are so in love with the people, the culture and the scenery. While not a luxury destination by any means, we believe Tanzania provides exactly what our climbers want and need - a way to unplug and a place to find their true selves. Having been there multiple times ourselves and having heard from our climbers, we can say with confidence, you'll be thousands of miles from where you are right now and perfectly at home.

Elevation: Mt. Kilimanjaro stands at an impressive 19,341 feet - that's 5,895 meters for our friends outside the U.S.- making it the highest freestanding mountain in the world and one of the seven summits. Climbing to that elevation is no joke and will earn you some major bragging rights with your friends!
What makes it perfect for an Awesome Climb: Mt. Kilimanjaro is a trekking mountain - no special equipment or climbing skills are needed. So, even if you've never climbed a mountain (or even considered it!) this adventure isn't outside your reach. It's also beautiful and strange and filled with fantastic scenery. Some of the most breathtaking moments I've had have been on that mountain (figuratively and literally!). Because of it's location and elevation, you get to experience 5 separate climate zones while you climb starting in the Rainforest and ending up in the Arctic Zone. personal development
Say those words and a dozen different ideas might come to mind. Is it like therapy? Life coaching? Outward bound for adults? What? Maybe the best way for me to describe the personal growth that happens on the mountain is to explain why I created this challenge in the first place.
The history: I've spent years and years working with people who desire change. People who WANT to be better and live a life consistent with their values but have a difficult time achieving it. One of the main roadblocks to any of us living our best life is the pattern of mediocrity we all get trapped in. I love helping people get better but I hate how hard it is. It's like while you are trying to make a really good life, your pretty good life gets in the way. This isn't to say you hate your life or you're completely stuck but it does feel at times like we just keep doing the same things over and over. And maybe those habits aren't working for you anymore. This event busts you free from the mediocre and challenges you to examine yourself and your life through NEW EYES. Because of the challenges of the mountain, you are FORCED to confront what may be holding you back in other areas. It's so much easier to make changes when you can get some distance from your every day life. Plus, you will be with others traveling the same path. Some of the greatest learning happens in community and that's what we create.
Speaking of community, here's what climbers have said about this adventure:
“This by far is the most incredibly, amazingly AWESOME experience I have ever had! Awesome Climbs combines the journey of personal development with the challenge of an endurance adventure. The AWESOME Team is incredibly skilled and supportive, and with the pure goal of getting you to your summit. Not enough words in the world can begin describe this journey.”
“What did the Mountain teach me about myself? I know who I am and I know what I'm capable of and how strong I am. I'm DONE trying to prove myself to others. Done trying to win approval and done worrying about what others think of me. I am awesome! Thank you Team Awesome for your love and support on the journey!”
“The most valuable part of my experience was the light-bulb moments I had throughout the Climb where I connected the lessons the mountain was teaching me with actions I could take off the mountain. It truly was "ah-ha" moments.”
“You guys are superb at empathy for your crew -- you knew exactly when we would need support, when we would need tough love, when we would need comforting, and when we would need attention to little details we would never have thought of.”
“I learned I'm stronger than I thought I was.”
“What an amazing adventure! I felt taken care of every step of the way. Every detail is taken care of, so all I had to do was concentrate on putting one foot in front of the other and making it to the top!”
